Pay TV distributors and over-the-top video players ranging Apple TV to Roku will soon face increased competition from Hong Kong-based Xtreamer.
The FCC Office of Engineering and Technology recently approved Xtreamer’s Winkey device, according to a test report obtained on Sunday by The Donohue Report. While the HDMI stick looks similar to streaming video dongles such as Roku and Google Chromecast, the device is actually a mini PC that runs Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system.
Xtreamer says it plans to begin shipping the Winkey device on Oct. 15. It is currently selling $209 pre-orders for a package that includes the Xtreamer Winkey and its AirMouse double-sided remote control, which contains a microphone and QWERTY keyboard.
