ViXS Builds Program Guide With Customized Tiles

Images contained in a recent patent application from Toronto-based technology vendor ViXS show how pay TV distributors may be able to offer subscribers a program guide featuring both video programming and social network feeds in customized tiles.

Sally DaubFormer ViXS CEO Sally Jean Daub is named as lead inventor on the patent application, titled, customized titled, “Video system with customized tiling and methods for use therewith.”

Abstract: A tile processor is configured to analyze sensor data to identify the at least one viewer and to generate tile configuration data in response to the identification of the at least one viewer that indicates a tiled partitioning of a screen display into a plurality of tiled regions. An A/V player generates tiled display data for display of the at least video program on a display device in accordance with the tile configuration data.

Patent Application

Claims:

1. A system for use with an audio/video (A/V) player that plays at least one video program from at least one video source, the system comprising: at least one sensor configured to generate sensor data corresponding to a viewing of the at least one video program via the A/V player by at least one viewer; and a tile processor configured to analyze the sensor data to identify the at least one viewer and to generate tile configuration data in response to the identification of the at least one viewer, wherein the tile configuration data indicates a tiled partitioning of a screen display into a plurality of tiled regions; wherein the A/V player generates tiled display data for display of the at least video program on a display device in accordance with the tile configuration data.

The system of claim 1 wherein the tile processor further generates tile data in response to the identification of the at least one viewer, wherein the tile data includes media from at least one secondary tile data source; wherein the plurality of tiled regions include at least one video region for display of the at least one video program, and at least one other region for display of the tile data.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein the at least one secondary tile source includes at least one of: a social media server or a messaging server.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the tile processor further generates tile data in response to the identification of the at least one viewer, wherein the tile data includes metadata associated with the at least one video program.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the plurality of tiled regions include at least one video region for display of the at least one video program; wherein the tile processor includes a viewer fovea tracking generator configured to generate fovea tracking data corresponding to the at least one viewer; wherein the fovea tracking data indicates at least one of the plurality of tiled regions corresponding to a region of viewer focus for the at least one viewer; and wherein, when the at least one of the plurality of tiled regions corresponding to the region of viewer focus is the at least one video region, the tile processor selects the metadata corresponding to a particular one of the at least one video program currently displayed in the at least one of the plurality of tiled regions.

The system of claim 1 wherein the tile processor includes a viewer fovea tracking generator configured to generate fovea tracking data corresponding to the at least one viewer, and wherein the fovea tracking data indicates at least one of the plurality of tiled regions corresponding to a region of viewer focus for the at least one viewer; and wherein the tile processor adjusts the tile configuration data in response to the indication of the at least one of the plurality of tiled regions corresponding to a region of viewer focus for the at least one viewer.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein the at least one viewer includes a plurality of viewers and the fovea tracking data indicates the at least one of the plurality of tiled regions corresponding to the region of viewer focus in the video program for the plurality of viewers.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the sensor data includes image data and wherein the tile processor analyzes the image data to identify the at least one viewer based a comparison of the image data to at least one viewer image stored in a viewer profile database.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one sensor includes a sensor of portable device data associated with the at least one viewer and wherein the tile processor.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the tile processor generates the tile configuration data based on viewer profile data corresponding to the at least one viewer that is identified.

11. A method for use with an audio/video (A/V) player that plays at least one video program from at least one video source, the method comprising: analyzing sensor data corresponding to a viewing of the at least one video program via the A/V player by at least one viewer, to identify the at least one viewer; and generating tile configuration data in response to the identification of the at least one viewer, wherein the tile configuration data indicates a tiled partitioning of a screen display into a plurality of tiled regions; wherein the A/V player generates tiled display data for display of the at least video program on a display device in accordance with the tile configuration data.

The method of claim 11 further comprising: generating tile data in response to the identification of the at least one viewer, wherein the tile data includes media from at least one secondary tile data source; wherein the plurality of tiled regions include at least one video region for display of the at least one video program, and at least one other region for display of the tile data; and wherein the at least one secondary tile source includes at least one of: a social media server or a messaging server.

13. The method of claim 11 further comprising: generating tile data in response to the identification of the at least one viewer, wherein the tile data includes metadata associated with the at least one video program.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the plurality of tiled regions include at least one video region for display of the at least one video program and wherein the method further comprises: generating fovea tracking data corresponding to the at least one viewer, wherein the fovea tracking data indicates at least one of the plurality of tiled regions corresponding to a region of viewer focus for the at least one viewer; and when the at least one of the plurality of tiled regions corresponding to the region of viewer focus is the at least one video region, the metadata is selected corresponding to a particular one of the at least one video program currently displayed in the at least one of the plurality of tiled regions.

15. The method of claim 11 further comprising: generate fovea tracking data corresponding to the at least one viewer, wherein the fovea tracking data indicates at least one of the plurality of tiled regions corresponding to a region of viewer focus for the at least one viewer; and adjusting the tile configuration data in response to the indication of the at least one of the plurality of tiled regions corresponding to a region of viewer focus for the at least one viewer.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein the sensor data includes image data and wherein the image data is analyzed to identify the at least one viewer based a comparison of the image data to at least one viewer image stored in a viewer profile database.
