Samsung Tackles Device Addiction

An inventor at Samsung has developed a system designed to battle user addiction to electronic devices.

The method, detailed in a patent application published on Thursday, involves rewarding consumers who use smartphones, tablets and other devices the least.

Samsung product manager Yongseok Lee is named as inventor on the patent application, titled, “System and method of preventing addiction to electronic device, and electronic device adapted to the same.”

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided of preventing addiction to an electronic device by the electronic device and/or a server. A method includes receiving, by the electronic device, a command to unlock the electronic device; playing an advertisement in response to the unlocking of the electronic device; and transmitting, to the server, subtraction point information based on the playing of the advertisement.

1. A method of preventing addiction to an electronic device, by an electronic device, the method comprising: receiving a command to unlock the electronic device; playing an advertisement in response to the unlocking of the electronic device; and transmitting, to a server, subtraction point information based on the playing of the advertisement.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising: receiving, from the server, ranking information of a user of the electronic device, based the subtraction point information; and displaying the ranking information.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising: receiving, from the server, overall ranking information calculated based on the ranking information of the user of the electronic device and another ranking information of another user; and displaying the overall ranking information.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein displaying the ranking information comprises one of: displaying the ranking information on a screen of the electronic device at a certain period; displaying the ranking information on the screen of the electronic device, in response to a user request; and displaying the ranking information on the screen of the electronic device, after unlocking the electronic device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein playing back the advertisement comprises skipping a remaining portion of the advertisement in response to a user skip command.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein transmitting the subtraction point information comprises transmitting additional subtraction point information when the remaining portion of advertisement is skipped.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising: receiving a setting of a function for preventing the addiction to the electronic device; and automatically altering a notification function of the electronic device, in response to the setting.

8. A method of preventing addiction to an electronic device, by a server, the method comprising: receiving, from the electronic device, information that a user of the electronic device has set a function for preventing addiction to the electronic device; adding an account for the user of the electronic device to a list of ranking candidates; receiving, from the electronic device, subtraction point information based on playing of an advertisement in the electronic device, after the electronic device is unlocked; updating a score of the account of the user, based on the subtraction point information; and calculating ranking information for the user, based on the updated score.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising calculating overall ranking information based on the ranking information of the user of the electronic device and another ranking information of another user included in the list of the ranking candidates.

10. The method of claim 8, further comprising identifying an award recipient from among the list of the ranking candidates based on the overall ranking information.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising providing an award to the award recipient.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein providing the award comprises at least one of: paying money to a previously registered deposit account of the award recipient; paying virtual money available for online use to the award recipient; and transferring mobile coupons to the award recipient.

13. The method of claim 8, further comprising: receiving, from the electronic device, information that the user of the electronic device has disabled the function for preventing addiction to the electronic device; and removing the account for the user of the electronic device from the list of the ranking candidates.

14. An electronic device comprising: a display; a transceiver configured to communicate with a server; and a controller configured to receive a command to unlock the electronic device, play an advertisement through the display in response to the unlocking of the electronic device, and transmit, to the server, via the transceiver, subtraction point information, based on the playing of the advertisement.

15. The electronic device of claim 14, wherein the controller is further configured to receive, from the server, via the transceiver, ranking information of a user of the electronic device, based the subtraction point information, and to display the ranking information through the display.

16. The electronic device of claim 15, wherein the controller is further configured to receive, from the server, via the transceiver, overall ranking information calculated based on the ranking information of the user of the electronic device and another ranking information of another user, and to display the overall ranking information through the display.

17. The electronic device of claim 14, wherein the controller is further configured to display the ranking information by performing one of: displaying the ranking information on a screen of the electronic device at a certain period; displaying the ranking information on the screen of the electronic device, in response to a user request; and displaying the ranking information on the screen of the electronic device, after unlocking the electronic device.

18. The electronic device of claim 14, wherein the controller is further configured to skip a remaining portion of the advertisement, in response to a user skip command.

19. The electronic device of claim 18, wherein the controller is further configured to indicate to the server, through additional subtraction point information, when the remaining portion of advertisement is skipped.

20. The electronic device of claim 14, wherein the controller is further configured to receive a setting of a function for preventing the addiction to the electronic device, and automatically alter a notification function of the electronic device, in response to the setting.
