With over-the-top delivery driving dynamic growth, the majority of consumers and operators will adopt 4K UHD TV by 2020, according to a survey Irdeto and SNL Kagan released Tuesday.
When asked which distribution platform would dominate the delivery of 4K/UHD programming within one to three years, 45% of video service providers picked OTT. The same percentage of respondents predicted that satellite would be the dominant platform.
Nearly 40 percent of respondents predicted cable would be the dominant platform for 4K UHD content within one to three years. Looking out more than three years, 36 percent of respondents expect telco platforms will dominate 4K UHD content delivery.
Other highlights worth noting from the Irdeto and SNL Kagan survey of nearly 500 service providers and content producers:
- 69% of respondents in the Americas think the majority of consumers would be willing to pay “a little extra” for 4K UHD content.
- IP-connected TVs will are driving the most 4K UHD consumption, followed by streaming video set-tops, smartphones and tablets.
- Live sports programming and early releases of hit movies will be the most popular 4K UHD content with consumers, according to about 60 percent of operators and content producers.
