Former Time Warner Cable CTO John Callahan turned a few heads at a conference in December 2013 when he predicted a wave of Android set-tops would disrupt the pay TV sector.
“Android adoption outside North America is something to keep an eye on if you’re an application developer. There’s a lot of momentum,” Callahan said at the TVOT NYC conference.
Recent FCC test reports obtained by The Donohue Report indicate that Callahan was right on the money. Several manufacturers based in Asia have ramped up production of Android streaming video set-tops that can access YouTube and apps available on the Google Play app store. While this article spotlights seven Android boxes, including 4K models, aioTV CEO Mike Earle says there are many more coming to market.
“There’s literally dozens and dozens of them out there,” Earle said Wednesday. For Earle, whose company has developed a software platform operators and programmers can use to stream both linear TV and online video programming to multiple consumer electronics devices — including Android boxes — the Android invasion is good news.
With streaming video devices like Roku, Xbox, Apple TV and Android set-tops making it easier for viewers to access both free and paid online video content on TVs, more cable operators are looking to make a business of selling broadband access and packages of over-the-top video programming. The best example is what Cablevision has done in the New York metropolitan market, where it now markets Hulu, CBS All Access, HBO Now and Showtime to broadband only customers.
While aioTV initially targeted Tier 2 and Tier 3 providers, Earle said that in recent months, major service providers “are taking a much harder look at an aioTV-based solution than they ever have.”
