Software developers and user interface designers at Time Warner Inc.’s HBO subsidiary are racing to introduce next-generation user interfaces for products like HBO Go and HBO Now, 21 patent applications obtained by The Donohue Report on Thursday indicate.
The inventions show how HBO could use IP video distribution to compete not only with rival content providers like Showtime, but how it may be able to compete with incumbent pay TV distributors like Comcast and AT&T with the launch of new direct-to-consumer subscription services.
HBO Senior Software Engineer and Architect Brandon Furtwangler is named as an inventor on the bulk of the patent applications that appeared in the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office database on Thursday. All 21 applications were filed by HBO in September 2015.
