In a deal that could create more competition in the metadata business for Tribune subsidiary Gracenote, Ericsson said that it will acquire entertainment metadata supplier FYI Television.
With programers and distributors looking to drive increased multiscreen viewing of live TV and on-demand content, demand for metadata that can help deliver personalized content recommendations has increased in recent years. Tribune combined its Tribune Media Services (TMS) metadata unit with Gracenote after acquiring the company from Sony in 2014.
Ericsson said that Grand Prarie-, Texas-based FYI Television, which aggregates TV entertainment content and live TV schedules from more than 9,000 networks, will bolster its broadcast and media services.
“As the TV industry evolves and viewing behavior changes, we believe that high-quality, rich metadata will be a key component for a personalized TV experience,” Ericsson EVP Magnus Mandersson said in Monday’s announcement.
