Comcast Eyes Dynamic Content Ratings

A Comcast engineer has designed a system that could help the nation’s largest cable MSO measure viewing on devices ranging from smart televisions to smart watches, according to a patent application published on Thursday.

Principal engineer Illirjan Papa is named as inventor on the patent application, titled, “Dynamic content ratings.”

Abstract: According to some aspects, methods and systems may include determining that events associated with requests or accessing content items have occurred. The methods and systems may also include authorizing transmission of the content items to the requesting devices based on credential information associated with the requests, and determining a viewership quantity metric associated with the requests.

Claims: 

1. A method comprising: determining that an event associated with requesting a content item has occurred; authorizing transmission of the content item based on checking credential information associated with the request; and in response to said authorizing, determining a viewership quantity metric associated with the event.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein determining that an event associated with requesting a content item has occurred comprises determining that one or more events associated with one or more content items has occurred at one or more user devices; wherein authorizing transmission of the content item comprises authorizing transmission of one or more content items to the one or more user devices based on information associated with the requests; and wherein determining there viewership quantity metric comprises determining a viewership quantity metric associated with the one or more events.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising ranking at least a portion of the one or more content items based on the viewership quantity metric associated with the one or more events.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein determining the viewership quantity metric associated with the one or more events further comprises determining the viewership quantity metric based on types of user devices associated with the one or more events.

5. The method of claim 2, further comprising: determining one or more accounts associated with the one or more user devices; and determining the viewership quantity metric associated with the one or more events based on the one or more accounts.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising: determining, based on the viewership quantity metric, device usage of one or more content platforms for one of the one or more accounts; and in response to the device usage of one of the one or more content platforms satisfying a predetermined threshold, providing support for the one of the one or more content platforms.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the viewership quantity metric associated with the event comprises determining a popularity rating for at least the event.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the viewership quantity metric associated with the event comprises determining the viewership quantity metric based on a type of network connection associated with the event.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the viewership quantity metric based on a type of network connection associated with the event further comprises determining the viewership quantity metric based on whether the type of network connection comprises at least one of a WiFi, wireless, 4G, LTE, QAM, fiber, cellular, and coaxial connection.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein determining that the event associated with requesting a content item has occurred comprises determining that at least one of a start event, restart event, digital video recorder event, trick play event, interactive content event, heartbeat event, end event, content change event, platform change event, and a device change event have occurred.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein determining that the event associated with requesting a content item has occurred comprises determining that an event associated with requesting interactive content has occurred.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising transmitting advertisement content based on the viewership quantity metric associated with the event.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein determining that the event associated with requesting a content item has occurred comprises determining that an interactive event associated with requesting interactive content has occurred; and wherein determining a viewership quantity metric associated with the event further comprises determining a viewership quantity metric associated with the interactive event.

14. A method comprising: determining that an event associated with requesting a content item has occurred; not authorizing transmission of the content item based on checking credential information associated with the request; and in response to said authorizing, determining a viewership quantity metric associated with the event.

The method of claim 14, wherein determining that an event associated with requesting a content item has occurred comprises determining that one or more events associated with one or more content items has occurred at one or more user devices; wherein not authorizing transmission of the content item comprises not authorizing transmission of one or more content items to the one or more user devices based on information associated with the requests; and wherein determining there viewership quantity metric comprises determining a viewership quantity metric associated with the one or more events.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein determining the viewership quantity metric associated with the one or more events further comprises determining the viewership quantity metric based on types of user devices associated with the one or more events.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein determining the viewership quantity metric associated with the event comprises determining the viewership quantity metric based on a type of network connection associated with the event.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein determining that the event associated with requesting a content item has occurred comprises determining that an interactive event associated with requesting interactive content has occurred; and wherein determining a viewership quantity metric associated with the event further comprises determining a viewership quantity metric associated with the interactive event.

19. A method comprising: determining that an event associated with requesting a content item has occurred; authorizing transmission of the content item based on checking credential information associated with the request; and in response to said authorizing, transmitting data associated with event to a third party for determination of a viewership quantity metric associated with the event.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein determining that the event associated with requesting a content item has occurred comprises determining that an interactive event associated with requesting interactive content has occurred; and wherein transmitting data associated with the event to a third party comprises transmitting the data to the third party for determination of a viewership quantity metric associated with the interactive event.
