Augmented and Virtual Reality Development Gain Steam

More than 100 inventions involving augmented or virtual reality technology were unveiled Thursday in patent applications filed by technology providers ranging from software giants to startups gaining their first public exposure.

Google-backed Magic Leap is named as applicant on 22 patent applications published on Thursday that involve virtual or agumented reality. Microsoft is named as applicant on several AR and VR inventions released today, including “Non-Greedy Machine Learning For High Accuracy.”

Inventions from Magic Leap that are detailed in new patent applications today include, “Using Object recognizers in an augmented or virtual reality system.” Lead systems architect Sam Miller is named as inventor on the patent application, which Magic Leap filed in May.

Abstract: An augmented reality display system comprises a passable world model data comprises a set of map points corresponding to one or more objects of the real world. The augmented reality system also comprises a processor to communicate with one or more individual augmented reality display systems to pass a portion of the passable world model data to the one or more individual augmented reality display systems, wherein the piece of the passable world model data is passed based at least in part on respective locations corresponding to the one or more individual augmented reality display systems.

Patent Application

Claims: 

1. An augmented reality system, comprising: a passable world model comprising a set of map points corresponding to one or more objects of the real world; and a processor to communicate with one or more individual augmented reality display systems to pass a piece of the passable world to the one or more individual augmented reality display systems, wherein the piece of the passable world is passed based at least in part on respective locations corresponding to the one or more individual augmented reality display systems.

2. The augmented reality system of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the passable world model resides in the one or more individual augmented reality display systems.

3. The augmented reality system of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the passable world model resides in a cloud-based server.

4. The augmented reality system of claim 1, wherein the passable world is constantly updated based at least in part on information received from the one or more individual augmented reality display systems.

5. The augmented reality system of claim 1, wherein a communication between the passable world model and the individual augmented reality systems is asynchronous.

6. The augmented reality system of claim 1, further comprising a set of object recognizers to recognize a set of objects of the passable world.

7. The augmented reality system of claim 1, wherein a first piece of the passable world corresponding to a first augmented reality system is passed to a second augmented reality system.

8. The augmented reality system of claim 8, wherein a location of the second augmented reality system is different from a location of the first augmented reality system.

9. The augmented reality system of claim 7, wherein a first user of the first augmented reality system is rendered as an avatar at the second augmented reality system.
